*22 weeks, 2 days*
Tuesday was a big day. Not only did it mark my being 22 weeks pregnant, but it was also the day Barack Obama clinched the democratic nomination for president. It's no secret how much I adore this man or that I've supported him wholeheartedly from day one. But on Tuesday, I was quite emotional about it, and maybe it was the hormones, but it was truly a historic day that I will never forget.
As Ben & I sat watching his speech, I kept rubbing my belly and thinking about what it might mean for my son's future if Barack is to become president. Everyone says they want a better world for their children, and I guess it was sort of an epiphany moment for me.
I want a better world for my child, and I think Barack Obama can give me that.
I became emotional as he spoke and my little boy moved inside of me. I told the baby - "Today is an important day, and when it comes time to vote for president, it will be a very special day because you and mommy are going to go vote for Barack Obama together."
My son will BE HERE by election day, which in and of itself is crazy, but it will mean so much to me to take him with to cast my ballot. It will be something he will never remember, but I will let him know that he was there and he was a part of something amazing.
I am over the moon that Barack is our candidate, and I am beside myself in awe that a black man will be president. It gives me hope for this country, which is not something you will hear me say often. He gives me hope, and I am so excited to see what the next five months have in store!
a little story about infertility, pregnancy, parenting, and just life in general.

Ultrasound Pictures and more!!
*21 weeks, 5 days*
So as you all know, we finally had our *big* ultrasound last Saturday! We finally got the scanner hooked up again, so it's picture time!! (Click on pictures to enlarge.)
His head is on the left, and his hands are in front of his mouth. It looks like he may be sucking his thumb! Already self-soothing in-utero... excellent!
The money shot!! That's his butt on the left, with both legs sticking out. The arrow points as his quite obvious boy parts! There's no doubt in our minds that he's a boy!
His legs are on the left, and his arms and head are on the right. It looks like he's looking at the camera. He's already hamming it up for the camera!!
Ever since the ultrasound last Saturday, our little man has been moving like crazy! Woohoo! Finally. I kept thinking I was feeling thinkgs, and now I know for sure he's moving. I don't know if maybe the noise of the ultrasound waves have him a wake up call or what, but it all started Saturday night. It's continued just about every night since, and even on Friday during the day! It's so awesome!
Last weekend's painting project is complete! The office/spare room looks freaking awesome! Ben did a great job. It's a blue gray color, and all the trim looks fresh and clean. We bought a new computer desk, which Ben set up on Friday night, and hopefully tonight or tomorrow we'll finish loading in the room so we can start getting the nursery ready! I'll post a picture of the room when I get a chance.

Happy *Belated* Mother's Day
*21 weeks, 1 day*
I TOTALLY forgot to mention Mother's Day! Duh! On mother's day, we had Julie, Scott, my mom, & Jeff over for dinner. Julie & Ben cooked, and I had spent the day cleaning. We took Ben's mom out to dinner at Claim Jumper the following week. For both the grandma's-to-be, we got a little something from us and baby. I found these adorable onesies at Kohl's and couldn't resist them!

It's a boy!!
*20 weeks, 6 days* ~ Happy Memorial Day!
After getting canceled AGAIN on Friday (the 23rd), we finally had our ultrasound on Saturday morning, and there's no mistaking, IT'S A BOY!!!! I finally cried at the doctor's office. Just seeing that little boy in there, moving around and showing us that all of his parts are developing perfectly, I had to breathe a sigh of relief and shed a tear of joy on the table. It was such an awesome experience. The doctor pointed out everything, and I could see everything he showed us. Four chambers of the heart, two halves of the brain, diaphram, spine, ribcage, eyes, nose, mouth, full tummy, legs, feet, arms, fingers. Well, and of course, the penis. :) He (our son, not the doctor) had his hands up by his face, and the doctor commented that maybe he was trying to suck his thumb. He looks perfect! I think he is going to look like Ben. He's measuring a bit big - the measurements move my due date up to the 4th, but I take that with a grain of salt because I think our kid is just going to be long, like his daddy. What's weird is that I swear I felt his moving like crazy on Saturday night. Did it take the ultrasound to get him moving? I haven't felt anything since, but I was pretty sure I was feeling him! We have SO MANY pictures from the ultrasound that I can't wait to post, but the scanner is currently out of commission because of this weekend's big painting project. I will post them absolutely as soon as possible!
There was no way that this long weekend was not going to be productive. Saturday night we went to Home Depot and bought the paint, and we spent literally *all day* Sunday emptying and prepping the former computer room. If you've been to our house and seen our computer room, you can imagine what an undertaking it was to empty it. It was sort of the "junk" room, for lack of a better term. There was so much crap in there to sort through, throw away, and organize that the majority of Sunday was spent unloading that room. Today, I've been staying out of Ben's way while he paints the trim and will hopefully get to the walls before the end of the night. I spent the day in the yard with my mom weeding. Thanks again mom! My house was looking pretty white-trash-ville with the amount of weeds and overgrowth in the gardens.... it's MUCH better now.
I'm hoping the painting project can be finished in the next few days after work so that we can hopefully load that room in next weekend. Load in means combining two rooms into one, as the computer room will remain an office, but will also be the spare bedroom to make way for the nursery. Slowly but surely, people! We think we've figured out a place for the furniture that we have between those two rooms. We definitely need to invest in a smaller (ie. narrower and shallower) computer desk that will fit better but still accomodate the entire computer.
So if next weekend is load in, I'm hoping the following weekend will mean registering for everything this little man needs. Time is of the essence because I'm pretty sure shower invites will be going out in the next few weeks.
It's never boring around here these days!

Change of plans...
*20 weeks, 1 day*
We're halfway there, people!!! After two long years of infertility, it's hard to believe I'm halfway through this pregnancy! Some days I feel like it flies by, and other days I feel like it's taking an eternity to meet our little one. Every day, I'm eternally greatful for the life that I have. I cannot express in words how much I love Ben and this little one and how greatful I am to have the love and support of so many amazing family and friends.
So, our ultrasound was scheduled for last Friday, May 16th at 3:30pm. I missed a call around 1:00, and called the doctor's office back as soon as I noticed they'd called. The secretary said they needed to reschedule my appointment because Dr. Carroll was at the hospital delivering some babies. I said okay and rescheduled. I texted Ben, asking him to call me right away, and when he called back, I prompted burst into tears.
For me, it wasn't so much about finding out the baby's gender (though that was part of it). I really just wanted to see the little one again. It's been ages since our last ultrasound at 10 weeks (back in mid-March), and I just want to know that everything looks good. I want the doctor to check the brain, the heart, the arms & legs, and all the other organs, and tell me everything looks perfect. And if we see some boy or girl parts ~ that will just be the icing on the cake.
Thursday night, Ben & I had laid in bed talking about the ultrasound and getting ourselves all hyped up about it, so I think it was just so crushing to have our hopes up, and then get canceled. We're rescheduled for THIS Friday, May 23rd at 3:30. I have a hard time thinking there's any chance we'll get canceled again. I've never been canceled on by my OBGYN until now, and I can't see it happening two weeks in a row. I am very optimistic that this Friday will be the big day!!
The goal for this weekend, being Memorial Day weekend, is to get some big projects done. We need to empty our current office (soon-to-be guest bedroom/office), clean, prep the walls, and paint. Once the paint's dry, and the room's done, we have to somehow cram two rooms worth of furniture into the one, only slightly larger room. I'm working out scenarios in my head.... Wish us luck!!
I'm also treating myself on Saturday to a pregnancy massage and pedicure!! I totally deserve it, and I can't wait to be pampered!

guess who we get to see on friday??
*18 weeks, 6 days*
Today was my monthly OB appt, and everything looks good! My blood pressure is right on (and has been consistently thankfully), I gained 2 lbs since last months visit (not bad), and baby's heartbeat was in the 140s. I asked the doctor if it was normal for the HB to go down (it was 160 last month), and he said at this point, it's normally between 120 and 150.
The big news is that we FINALLY got to schedule our ultrasound for THIS FRIDAY! WOOHOO!! After going back and forth about finding out the sex, I'm totally on board now, and I really just can't wait to see little Baby K for the first time in what feels like a freaking eternity!! It's been about 9 weeks since my last ultrasound at the REs office, and i'm dying to see what baby looks like!
I did a ton of shopping over the week. Bought myself a bunch of new clothes and a few things for baby, as well. Once we find out the gender, I sure the shopping will get a little out of control... I can't wait!!

Go Cubs!
*16 weeks, 5 days*
I made a few purchases today for baby! The first is a blanket that I first saw online at Babies R Us, but it's supposedly being discontinued. For that reason, I had to buy it rather than wait to register for it:

The second was a definitely impulse buy, but the price was right! I bought this onesie in a 6-9 month size - perfect for the beginning of next baseball season!

i've been sick...
*16 weeks*
Today marks 16 weeks of pregnancy. It's hard to believe it's been so long already. It was 14 weeks ago today that I had my egg retrieval and they (whoever "they" are - maybe the embryologist?) fertilized my eggs. Well, EGG, since we only got one good one. But as they say, it only takes one!
I don't think I ever commented on the fact that my sister had surgery almost two weeks ago now. She had her gall bladder removed (it's the cool thing to do), and she's now recovering nicely, and enjoys showing off her "belly button butt". I think she's glad to be feeling better again and to be free to resume eating anything she wants!
As for me, I've been sick for the past week and a half, and it SUCKS! The second trimester is supposed to be a breeze, yet I feel like my head is going to explode! We went up to Michigan for Katie's birthday two weekends ago (April 12-13), and on the way to the hotel the night of the 12th, my throat started getting really sore. I've been dealing with "rhinitis of pregnancy", or pregnancy induced congestion for weeks, and I suspect it will continue to ail me in the coming weeks. But anyways, I think because of the congestion, I was sleeping with my mouth open, thus the sore throat. So for about four days, I was SUPER congested and had a terribly sore throat, and then around Wednesday last week, the cough started. Thursday night it kept both me and Ben up all night, so Friday I called the clinic just to be safe. The doc examined me and basically said it all adds up to congestion and a nasty post-nasal drip. (Sorry TMI) She gave me a prescription in case it turned into a sinus infection, but advised I try taking Benadryl to dry it up. I think the Benadryl, in conjunction with Vitamin C, is helping, but the cough is still there and still *very* annoying.
Changing the subject, baby can hear now. Not the outside world so much, but my heartbeat, my stomach, etc. I think that's pretty rad. I wonder why it is we can't remember being in utero? Is birth really *that* traumatic. Anyways, even though baby can't hear my voice yet, I talk to it all the time. So no more "Crazy Mindy's talking to herself again" (as I've been known to do) - now I'm talking to my baby. ;)
Baby also will start making movements soon for me to feel. My friend Kari said she felt her son move for the first time at 16 weeks. For the past week, I've been willing baby to move. I concentrate on my tummy so hard, I think I've started imagining things. I think I feel something, and then my stomach gurgles or it's just gas. Everyone I've talked to and everything I've read says you'll know when you feel it, and describes the movement as fluttery, sort of like butterflies in your stomach... we'll see!
Last weekend, Julie and I went on a mission. Well, there was really no purpose of the mission, other than to look at baby stuff. I've made wishlists on a variety of websites, so you may put my name in someplace and something might pop up, but PLEASE don't buy anything yet. I need to narrow down what I actually want and *officially* register (sooner than later, indeed). But anyways, I initially fell in love with furniture at Pottery Barn Kids, but over the weekend I found some stuff I really like at the Land of Nod, which is the Crate & Barrel kids store. It's equally nice compared to PBK, but the price is a bit less. We also comparison shopped at Babies R Us, and I was not impressed in the quality (no offense to anyone who's furniture is from BRU). I am just a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", and good furniture is something that is worth spending money on.
When we were at Pottery Barn Kids, I made a purchase. I found this little guy the first time we went there, and I fell in love.
He's called Sleep Sheep. I call him Toby Sheep because he a little bit reminds me of Toby as a baby... they kind of have a similar profile. What do you think?Click on image to enlarge
Anyways, Sleep Sheep is a SUPER soft little guy who has a sound box built in that produced four different nature sounds, and he attaches right onto the crib. Ben thinks he's a little Teddy Ruxpin-esque, referring to the roommate I had in college who slept with her faceless (yes, faceless) Teddy Ruxpin every night. To that I say, WHATEVER! Unlike Teddy Ruxpin's cassette player, Toby Sheep's sound box is REMOVABLE, so if he becomes baby's comfort toy, so be it. Here's more about Sleep Sheep: http://www.sleepsheepandfriends.com/sheep.html
I'm hoping to post belly pictures soon. To me, they only look a teeny bit different from week 7 when we started taking photos until now, so I'm sure they won't look at all different to anyone else... I do promise though to get them up here very soon.

We love our baby!
*14 weeks, 6 days*
I couldn't think of a title for this entry, so what the hell - it's true! We love our baby!! We talk to it all the time, even though it can't hear us yet. I can't wait til it can! I can't wait until I can feel it move, and then until Ben can feel it move... I can't speak for Ben, but my little one is the first thing I think of when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I fall asleep at night. We are still so in awe of science, and so amazed that this is finally happening. I think other people must think I'm nuts for still finding the fact that I'm pregnant crazy, but after everything, it is still sometimes hard to believe that this is real.
Today it's definitely real though. We went back to the doctor today. They basically checked my urine, weight, and blood pressure, and then the doctor measured my uterus - measuring right at 15 weeks, he said - and we heard the heartbeat again! This time is was at 160. That's the highest yet! Hearing it is so absolutely amazing, but also so surreal. I often stop and think how remarkable it is that there's a little person growing inside of me. I guess I'd never really given the act of being pregnant much thought prior to actually *being* pregnant, so now every day is just mind boggling...
We have our next appointment on May 12th and will have our sonogram shortly thereafter. The doctor said he usually does sonograms on Fridays, so I'm guessing either May 16th or May 23rd. Whether we'll find out the gender or not is still somewhat up in the air, and even if we do, we're unsure as to whether or not we'll share the gender with the public. But regardless, we'll get to see the baby again SOON, and I can't wait. We were so spoiled with all the ultrasounds in the beginning!
